Decoding the Calendar and Clock

We constantly have to invent two versions of things for our setting, one Vraszenian, one Liganti. This extends to the calendar, too — though the Vraszenian calendar only shows up in the days of the week. If you’re curious for how that maps to our own calendar, here is the conversion!

Hours of the day

The day is divided into twenty hours, which are formally grouped into the “sun hours” (day) and “earth hours” (night). A bell is equivalent to twelve minutes; there are six bells in an hour.

  • First sun — 6 a.m. – 7:12 a.m.
  • Second sun — 7:12 a.m. – 8:24 a.m.
  • Third sun — 8:24 a.m. – 9:36 a.m.
  • Fourth sun — 9:36 a.m. – 10:48 a.m.
  • Fifth sun — 10:48 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Sixth sun — 12 p.m. – 1:12 p.m.
  • Seventh sun — 1:12 p.m. – 2:24 p.m.
  • Eighth sun — 2:24 p.m. – 3:36 p.m.
  • Ninth sun — 3:36 p.m. – 4:48 p.m.
  • Tenth sun — 4:48 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • First earth — 6 p.m. – 7:12 p.m.
  • Second earth — 7:12 p.m. – 8:24 p.m.
  • Third earth — 8:24 p.m. – 9:36 p.m.
  • Fourth earth — 9:36 p.m. – 10:48 p.m.
  • Fifth earth — 10:48 p.m. – 12 a.m.
  • Sixth earth — 12 a.m. – 1:12 a.m.
  • Seventh earth — 1:12 a.m. – 2:24 a.m.
  • Eighth earth — 2:24 a.m. – 3:36 a.m.
  • Ninth earth — 3:36 a.m. – 4:48 a.m.
  • Tenth earth — 4:48 a.m. – 6 a.m.

Days of the week

The seven day-names have persisted from Vraszenian usage, overwriting the northern system of six-day weeks. Because there is neither an assumption of a five-day work week nor a day designated for rest, these don’t map to specific real-world days, but each one is associated with one of the Vraszenian clans (and named, in Vraszenian, for their emblematic animals).

  • Meralny — the Day of the Horse, for the Meszaros
  • Prezilny — the Day of the Rat, for the Stretsko
  • Ošidny — the Day of the Owl, for the Anoškin
  • Epytny — the Day of the Spider, for the Varadi
  • Vilačny — the Day of the Fox, for the Dvornik
  • Tsapekny — the Day of the Raccoon, for the Kiraly
  • Andusny — the Day of the Dreamweaver, for the Ižranyi

Months of the year

Vraszenians follow a lunar calendar based on the larger and faster-cycling moon, with the new year coming at the Festival of Veiled Waters. The northern calendar is solar, and divided into ten months of thirty-six days each, with five intercalary days at the summer solstice (their New Year). These intercalary days cut the month of Colbrilun in half, which relates to its association with Illi (representing both 0 and 10).

  • Colbrilun — Illi, snake — midsummer, June 1st – July 11th
  • Similun — Uniat, monkey — late summer, July 12th – August 16th
  • Lepilun — Tuat, rabbit — early fall, August 17th – September 21st
  • Canilun — Tricat, dog — mid-fall, September 22nd – October 27th
  • Suilun — Quarat, pig — late fall, October 28th – December 2nd
  • Equilun — Quinat, horse — early winter, December 3rd – January 7th
  • Apilun — Sessat, bee — mid-winter, January 8th – February 12th
  • Pavnilun — Sebat, peacock — late winter, February 13th – March 20th
  • Cyprilun — Noctat, carp — early spring, March 21st – April 25th
  • Fellun — Ninat, cat — late spring, April 26th – May 31st
